A little background
On LinkedIn, I asked people what they wanted me to write a poem about. A personal topic. One of many responses was from a young woman living in Ukraine, in the midst of war. All she replied was ‘Ukraine’.
I messaged her asking to share more about her experience and what she wanted me to write about.
She replied that, after giving it some thought, she wanted to focus on their humour and the opportunity they still find to laugh. Despite feelings of anger, pain, emptiness, and fear every day.
She told me they were still able to smile and make jokes. Take care of each other and animals. How they communicate with each other. How everybody in their building became like family.
She wanted it to be about the unity they experience.
Thank you for sharing your experience and allowing me to write about it. x
Love Remains
this is a poem about a war
that carries loss and terror,
fear and despair
about what remains
what can be found
when all else is lost
it is in the war
we did not choose
when the lights go out
that we see each other
between the crevices
of terror and darkness
where humanity is found
it’s in the walls of our homes
that they break down
in every brick
that falls
our love is found
will pull us closer,
pulls us together
it’s in the ruins
of our walls
we find back
the jokes we feared
we lost forever
that pull us through
when hope seems gone
it’s the smile
that shows a thread
we can hold onto
when we think
despair was all
that was left
it’s our unity
like an invisible thread
woven between us
that we hold onto
helps us see each other
when darkness falls
it’s in war
love remains
in its remains
Prachtig. Well written and a great message.
